Taxonomy
The study of biological classification
What are plants and animals classified by?
Their unique characteristics that they possess and we can work out how they are related by what characteristics they share
Who is known as the ‘father of modern Taxonomy’?
Carl Linnaeus
What larger group that all species are placed in called?
Genera (singular: genus)
What do all species in a single genus possess that makes them distinct from other generas?
Similarities with one another
What is the ‘two naming’ system called? And give and example
Bi-nomial naming system e.g Homo sapien
What should the genus always have?
A capital letter (e.g Homo)
What should the species always have?
A lower case letter (e.g sapien)
What could the species and genus be remembered as?
Genus - family name
Species - personal name
What does the hierarchy of classifications look like?
An upside down triangle with the most specific at the bottom ad the most general at the top
What is the order of the hierarchy of classification (starting at the top)?
Domain Kingdom Phyla Class Order Family Genus Species
What is the scientific name of a dog compared to a wolf?
Dog - Canis lupus familiaris
Wolf - Canis lupus
(Familiaris means domesticated)
