Chapter 5 - Extinction Flashcards
Extinction occurs when:
- A behavior that has been previously reinforced
- No longer results in the reinforcing consequences
- The behavior stops occurring in the future
Extinction Burst
Increase in frequency, duration, or intensity of the unreinforced behavior during the extinction process
Extinction burst is when:
- The behavior may briefly increase in frequency, duration or intensity
- Novel behaviors may occur
- Emotional responses or aggressive behavior may occur
Spontaneous recovery
The behavior may occur again even after it has not occurred for some time
What is a common misconception about Extinction
Different depending on the type of reinforcement of behavior, the outcome is always the same: behavior stops
Factors that influence Extinction
- When a behavior is continuously reinforced, it decreases rapidly once the reinforcement is terminated When a behavior is intermittently reinforced, it often decreases more gradually once the reinforcement is terminated
- If reinforcement occurs in the course of extinction, it takes longer for the behavior to decrease
Intermittent reinforcement before extinction produces what?
Resistance to extinction
What is a common misconception about extinction?
Extinction means ignoring the behavior
Extinction of positively reinforced behavior
the positive reinforcer is no longer delivered following the behavior
Extinction of negatively reinforced behavior
the negative reinforcer is no longer removed following the behavior
