Chapter 5: Consciousness Flashcards
What happens to your body temperature when you’re asleep?
It’s usually at its lowest peak
When is your temperature at its highest peak of the day?
Usually afternoon
What is the circadian rhythm?
The 24-hour biological cycles found in humans and many other species
What are biological rhythms?
Periodic fluctuations in physiological functioning
What is freuds theory of dreaming?
Dreams are a roadway into our unconscious
Manifest content
Latent content
What is latent content of a dream?
Underlying meaning
What is the manifest content of a dream?
Story line
What is the activation synthesis theory of dreaming?
Our cerebral cortex is trying to interpret random electrical activity we have while sleeping
Why some dreams make no sense
What is the information processing theory of dreams?
Dreams are a way of dealing with the stresses of every day life
We dream more when we are stressed
What is William James connected to while thinking about consciousness?
The stream of consciousness
What is the stream of consciousness?
There is in endless flow of ideas that zigzag in all directions going through your mind
What happens in stage one of the sleep cycle?
You’re kind of awake and kind of asleep
Experience it once a night
Brain produces theta waves
What happens in stage two of the sleep cycle
More theta waves that get progressively slower
Begins to show sleep spindles
What is a sleep spindle?
Random bursts of brain activity in only stage two of the sleep cycle
What happens in stage three and four of the sleep cycle?
Slow wave sleep occurs
You produce delta waves (more in stage 4)
Involves body growth and hormones
What is slow wave sleep?
It consists of stages three and four, during which high amplitude, low-frequency delta waves become prominent in EEG recordings
What is REM?
Rapid eye movement
Brain is very active in dreams usually occur here
Body is essentially paralyzed
What is REM rebound?
If you miss your REM sleep your body forces you to get REM
What hormones are associated with adjusting our biological clocks?
Melatonin
What does the Pines control related to the sleep cycle?
REM sleep
What structure of the brain is most related to sleep and wakefulness?
The hypothalamus
Where do beta waves occur?
Normal waking thought, alert problem solving
Where do Alpha waves occur?
Deep relaxation, blank mind, and meditation
When does theta waves occur?
Light sleep
Where do theta waves occur?
Deep sleep
Stages 3+4
What is wishfulfilment?
When people have dreams about what they want to happen (Freud)
What is insomnia?
Persistent problem falling asleep
What is narcolepsy?
Suffer from sleeplessness and may fall sleep at unpredictable or inappropriate times
What is sleep apnea?
Person stops breathing during their sleep and wakes up momentarily to gasp for air then falls back asleep
What are nightterrors?
Sleep disorder characterized by high arousal and an appearance of being terrified
Occurs in stage four – you do not remember it
What are night mares?
Anxiety – arising dreams that lead to a weakening usually from REM Sleep
What is somnambulism (sleep walking)?
Occurs when a person arises and wonders about while remaining asleep
Usually happens within the first three hours of sleep
What does EEG measure?
The electrical activity of the brain overtime
Definition of consciousness
The awareness of internal and external stimuli
Personal awareness
