Chapter 4 | Waves Flashcards
A duck is sitting on a pond, and the water is moving in waves, how does it move and why?
The waves are moving in one direction, the duck moves over the waves and the duck stays in one spot.
Waves propagate in two (2) ways, name them and how they work.
- Transverse waves. They have perpendicular movement.
2. Longitudinal waves. They have parallel movement.
There are two (2) types of waves, name them and their info.
- Transverse:
- Propogates (moves/speed) perpendicular to the motion of the medium
- Crest = highest point
- Trough = lowest point - Longitudinal:
- Propogates parallel to the motion of the medium
- Particles move closer together then farther apart
Name the characteristics of a wave:
-Amplitude:
Max distance travelled by a particle in the medium compared to the equilibrium
-Wavelength:
The length of a waves complete cycle =
*Crest to Crest for transverse waves
**Area of rarefaction to area of compression for longitudinal waves
-Frequency:
Hot cycles per unit of time measure in Hertz (Hz)
