Chapter 1 | Pure Substances And Mixtures Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
It’s one kind of particle
What is a mixture?
2 or more types of particles
What’s a homogeneous mixture?
Homogeneous means you can’t tell a mixture is comprised of 2 substances to the naked eye
Or
2 or more different substances that cannot be distilled without magnification
Example: Ethyl Alcohol and Water
What’s a heterogenous mixture?
It’s a mixture with greater than 2 or more substances we can tell apart with the naked eye
Example: Strawberry Milkshakes
What are the different kinds of homogeneous mixtures?
- Colloids
2. Solutions
What’s a Colloid?
Looks like one pure substance, but is actually a homogeneous mixture of two or more particles that can be told apart with magnification
What’s a solution?
Two or more substances that we can’t tell apart
What are the two things in solutions?
- Solute :
- Dissolves into a solution - Solvent :
- Dissolves the solute
What’s an Alloy?
It’s a solution with metals ;
Solution/Alloy
Example
85% + 15% = 100%
Copper + Tin = Bronze
