Chapter 2 | Intro To Energy Flashcards
Where do we find Energy?
- Heat
- “Organisms” (Bodies)
- Car Wheels
- “Everywhere”
What’s the definition of energy?
The capacity to do work and the capacity to produce change
What are the different kinds of energy?
1. Mechanical —> Things That Move — Objects — Machines 2. Radiant — Solar Power 3. Thermal — Heat — Absence Of Heat 4. Chemical Energy — Baking Soda And Vinegar
What are we talking about when we talk about Thermal Energy?
We talk about heat or temperature ;
Thermal energy is the random movement of particles that make up a substance
What do the bonds between the particles have to do with the movement of particles?
Stronger bonds between particles restrict more movement
How is chemical energy stored?
Chemical energy is stored in chemical bonds, and when the bonds are broken, energy is released.
What is Mechanical Energy?
It’s energy that results from the interaction of the speed, mass and position of an object.
To summarize about Mechanical Energy:
Greater mass and speed means:
- More Energy
- Kinetic Energy
Greater height means:
- More Energy
- More potential
