Chapter 2 | Energy & Physical Changes Flashcards
When energy changes form, we say it what?
When energy changes form, we say it transforms.
When a log of wood is burning what kind of transformation is happening?
- Wood (Chemical Energy)
Turns into ↓ - Fire (Thermal Energy)
- Light (Radiant Energy)
What is Energy Transfer?
Energy Transfer is the movement of energy from one place to another
What happens when you leave a mug of hot chocolate on the counter?
The counter gets hot ;
Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from one place to another.
What are physical changes?
Physical Changes : A change in which no chemical reaction occurs. The nature and characteristic properties of the substance remains the same.
How do we measure phase change?
In Joule (J)
1J is the amount of energy it takes to lift 1N (Newton) by 1m
What is a Newton?
It’s a unit of force
What’s the difference between mass & weight?
Mass is the measurement of the amount of matter in an object or substance
Weight is a measurement of how heavy something is by gravity
What’s the equation for force?
F = m x a (Force) = (Mass) x (Acceleration)
Write the equation for water changing state from Gas to Liquid
Water Vapour —> Liquid Water + (2260J) Energy
What is the equation for water changing from Solid state to Liquid state?
Ice + (330J) Energy —> Liquid Water
What does energy have to do with physical change?
Some solutes release energy when dissolved in water, some absorb energy
