A

A sacrament is the sign that confers what it signifies. The sign of our salvation and the means by which we are gathered and saved is the Church. Christ called us together and we belong to Him in the Church, which is both universal and local. The Church is a sacrament, the visible structures represent the inner, spiritual reality. The Church has both visible and invisible structures. The visible structures include the hierarchy, and institutions. The invisible structure includes the invisible communion of faithful with God. The sacraments, given by God, especially Baptism and the Eucharist, establish this communion.
