Covered Mall building
Roofed or covered pedestrian area into which two or more tenants have their main entrances
Limited to three levels at any point; if they have more than two areas connected then there should be a smoke control system
Open Mall
unroofed common pedestrian way serving multiple tenants
When are two means of egress needed from a tenant space?
- Max Travel distance for tenants is 75 feet
- if the travel distance is more than 75 feet or the occupant load is 50 or more then there need to be two means of egress from the tenant space
What are anchor buildings?
- Anchor builds are not considered to be part of a covered mall
- Have separate exits from the covered portion
- Not more than three stories
Gross leasable area (GLA)
total floor area available to tenant occupancy, measure from the centerlines of joint partitions to the outside of tenant wall
High Rises (code definition)
a building that exceeds the maximum level of more than 75’ above the level that a fire ladder can reach.
-Note the criteria is not determined by the height of the building but by the highest occupied floor
Atriums
an opening connecting two or more floor levels that are closed at the top
-Travel distance can’t exceed 200’ throughout
Opening into the atrium may be glazed if a special fire sprinkler is provided
