Factory and Industrial Group [F]
These areas are assumed to not be public areas, the users are presumed to be familiar with their surroundings and not occasional visitors.
-Consist of Low Haz. [F1] and High Haz. [F2}
F-1 group
There is a moderate hazard occupancy.
Distinction from classifying a F-1 or H would be the quantities of materials used in the facility, i.e. F occu. manu. alcoholic beverages over 16% alc. content
leather products, metal, millwork
F-2
Low Hazardous or material that is considered to be noncombustible
-During finishes, packaging or processing do not involve a significant fire.
Beverages up to 16% alcohol
brick and masonry
ceramic, glass products, etc.
High Hazard Group [H]
Areas where occupancies contain certain levels of highly hazardous material relating to the use and quantities of those materials Groups H1-H4
Control Areas
High- Hazard Group H requires special detailed requirements for the areas where quantities of haz. mat. do not exceed the max. allowable quantities (Wiley, BCI, 26)
Institutional Group [I]
Institutional occupancies are those where people have special restrictions placed on them. The group is subdivided by the occ. ability to take care of themselves in an emergency.
Facilities where people may nor may not need assistance. Hospital, clinics, medical care. nursing homes, custodial care Hospitals
Group I -1
Has more than 16 people living under supervised conditions and receiving custodial care in a residential environment on a 24 hour basis
Group I-2
Has more than 5 people living under 24hour supervision, and are incapable of self-preservation in emergencies, needing assistance from staff.
Condition 1: in facilities with nursing and medical care but no services associated with hospital
Condition 2: this occupancy is for hospitals and facilities with emergency care, surgery, and in-patient stabilization
Group I-3
24-hour care under restrictive security, therefore prisons, detention center, and mental hospitals
Have controlled exit measures

Group I-4
Uses of 5 or more people, under custodial care on a less than 24 hour basis, need assistance from staff in emergencies

Mercantile Group [M]
Incidental storage, Accessory occupancies are regulated and must be individually classified, large storage areas would be classified as Group S
Residential Group [R]
Residential units typical housing units distinguished mainly by total number of occupants
R-1
Occupants are transient, sleep in rooms for 30 days or less
- Hotels, or boarding houses
R-2
Occupants are permanent sleeping in buildings containing more than two dwelling units for mare than 30 days
-Dormitaories, apartments, and long term residential boarding houses
R-3
Occupants are permanent, and group, primarily single-family residences and duplexes,
- Daycares for 5 or less people using facilities for less
than 24 hours also falls under this category
- boarding houses with 16 or fewer non-transient
people or 10 or fewer transient occupants
