Chapter 4 Flashcards
What are organic compounds?
Compounds containing carbon and its most frequent parteners
Source of carbon for all organic molecules found in organisms
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Hydrocarbon energy storage
Can undergo reactions that release a large amount of energy
What are the different variations in carbon skeletons?
Length, branching, double bonds, rings
What are isomers?
Compounds that differ in the covalent arrangements of their atoms or have the same covalent arrangement but different spatial arrangements owing to the inflexibility of double bonds
3 types of isomers
Structural, cis-trans, enamtiomers
What is a structural isomer?
Both compounds have the same molecular formula but different structures
What is a cis-trans isomer?
Both compounds have the same molecular formula but different positions of x functional groups
What is a enantiomer?
Molecules that are mirror images of each other
What are functional groups?
Components of organic molecules that are most commonly involved in chemical reactions; number and arrangement give it its unique properties
