Chapter 3 Flashcards
Water is what kind of molecule?
Dipolar - separation of positive and negative charges
What is cohesion?
When water sticks to itself
What is adhesion?
When water sticks to other things
What is high surface tension?
Molecules at the surface form stronger bonds
What is high specific heat?
The higher the specific heat, the longer it takes to heat up
How does water moderate temperature?
Due to its high specific heat
What is evaporative cooling and what does it do?
Liquid -> gas ; Stabilizes temperatures (humans sweat)
Water is less dense in ___ state than in ___ state
Solid, liquid
Why is ice less dense than water?
Ice hydrogen bonds are stable while liquid hydrogen bonds are constantly breaking and reforming
Why is there a loss of ice on Earth?
Climate change ; Disrupting ecosystems
In what ways is water a versatile solvent?
Due to its polarity, it forms hydrogen bonds easily
Hydrophilic
Mixes with water
Hydrophobic
Does not mix in water
Are lipids hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Hydrophobic ; Otherwise water would fill into out cells causing them to burst
Acidic solution
OH- < H+
