Chapter 31.3 Flashcards
How does the central nervous system receive sensory information?
Receives sensory information from the Peripheral Nervous System
How do muscles and glands receive commands from the central nervous system?
the motor division of the peripheral nervous system transmits impulses from the cental nervous system to muscles or glands.
What is the somatic nervous system?
regulates the bodies activities that are under conscious control
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Regulates activities that are involuntary, or not under conscious control.
What is a reflex arc?
A pathway where a rapid response is caused by impulses that does not required conscious thought
1) sensory receptors pick up stimuli
2) sensory neurons relay information to the spinal cord
3) interneuron in the spinal cord forms response
4) motor neuron stimulated
5) muscle contracts and reflexive motion is produced
What does a chemoreceptor respond to and where are some found?
Responds to chemicals.
Located in the mouth, nose, and blood vessels
What does a photoreceptor respond to and where are they located?
Responds to light (photons)
Located in the eyes (retina)
What do mechanoreceptors respond to and where are they located?
Responds to touch, pressure, vibrations, and touch.
Located in skin, hair follicles, ears, ligaments, and tendons
What are thermoreceptors and where are they located?
Thermoreceptors respond to temperature changes.
They are found in the skin and hypothalamus.
What are pain receptors and where are they located?
Responds to tissue injury.
Found throughout the body.
Sensory information is carried ___________ of the spinal cord and motor information is carried ___________ of the spinal cord.
in the back (dorsal) side, out the front (ventral) side
