Chapter 10.3 Flashcards
How is the cell cycle regulated?
the cell cyle is controlled by regulatory proteins both inside and outside of the cell
Inside- Internal Regulatory Proteins (like the cyclins)
Outside- Growth Factors
How do cancer cells differ from other cells?
Cancer cells do not respond to the signals that regulate the growth of most cells. As a result, the cells divide uncontrollably.
Cancer cells form into masses called tumors
What is cyclin?
protein that plays a role in regulating the timing of the cell cycle
What is a growth factor?
growth factors stimulate the growth and division of cells, especially important during embryonic development and wound healing.
What is apoptosis?
Programmed cell death (self-destruct mode)
What is cancer?
disorder in which body cells lose the baility to control cell growth
What is the difference between a benign and malignant tumor?
benign tumor - noncancerous tumor that does not spread to surrounding healthy trissue or to other parts of the body
malignant tumor - cancerous tumor that invades and destroys surrounding healthy tissue
What are the most common types of cancer in males and females?
Females - Breast Cancer
Males - Prostate Cancer
