Introduction to the Clinical Lab
What is hemolyzed blood?
A blood sample in which the red blood cells are ruptured
What are the responsibilities of an MA in a clinical laboratory?
Properly collect patient specimens and perform specific testing procedures with the POL, Assist with preparing specimens to be transported and perform CLIA-waived testing
What is an aliquot?
A portion of a well-mixed sample removed for testing
Decreased hemoglobin levels in a patient is commonly seen in what illness/disorder?
Iron-deficiency anemia, hyperthyroidism, and cirrhosis of the liver
What is microbiology?
The study of small infectious organisms such bacteria, fungi, yeast, parasites, and viruses. specimens used in microbiology include blood, urine, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid stool, wound material and other biological sources.
FDA
The US food and drug administration is responsible for categorizing commercially marked test performed in vitro based on CLIA guidelines.
CDC
Centers for disease, control, and prevention continuously monitor infection and disease in the US. The CDC has recommended preventative practices called standard precautions which include hand hygiene, the use of PPE, safety needle practices, safe handling of contaminated equipment and services of the patient environment and respiratory hygiene.
