Chapter 3 science Flashcards
What is a solid?
Something with a definite shape and volume
What is the cause for a solid’s shape and volume?
Inside, particles are packed closely together and tightly fixed in one position
How much do particles move in a solid?
Not much
What does it mean when the particles in a solid are locked in the same position and can only vibrate?
They only have enough energy to vibrate, not more around
What are crystalline solids?
Solids that are made up of crystals that are from forming a repeating pattern of particles
What are amorphous solids?
Particles that are not arranged in a pattern
Liquid
Where particles slide/collide past each other and has a definite volume but has no shape of its own
What is the same between liquids and solids
In both solids and liquids, the atoms will stay at the same average distance
Fluid
A type of liquid that means “a substance that flows”
Surface tension
A characteristic property of liquids that is the result of pull
inwards among the liquid molecules that bring them closer
together
Viscosity
A property of liquid, that makes it resist floating
Gas
A fluid thats particles move everywhere and changes volume easily and has no definites shape or volume
Melting
The change in state from a solid to a liquid
Melting point
A characteristic temperature in most pure substances that causes melting to occur at a certain point
Freezing
The reverse process of melting where a liquid changes into a solid
