What is Republic?
No longer lead by a king and the power rested on the citizen
Senate
Wealthy people are in the senate. They make laws for the republic
Hagia Sophia
A church created by the Byzantine Emperors to spread Christianity.
Hippodrome
built in rome, was the arena for chariot races, seats 100,000 people
Chariot
Chariot races was their only source of entertainment, after they could no longer crucify Christians. They took place in circues maximus–they had no rules and often fought to the death
Pompeii
a city in south italy, located near the naples that was flourishing with lots of resources and wealthy people. It was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius
Vesuvius
volcano that erupted caused destruction of pompeii
Mosaics
They pieces of tinted rock or glass that are used to tell a story without using any words
Parables
Jesus spoke in parables, using everyday language and stories pulled from everyday life that people could relate to and interpret them as examples of love, compassion and justice
Bishop
Part of the clergy, in charge of several churches grouped together (dioceses)
Pope
Once a Roman Bishop, became the leader of all churches and authority over all, even kings and emperors
Patriarch
Had power over all churches and made all the rules
Julius Ceasar
First roman emperors after the republic was established after Remus died. Overcome with power, people became jealous so the roman senate decided to kill him (Brutus)
Constantine
Constantinople was named after Roman Emperor Constantine. He was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity
Justinian
Justian Code–created lots of rules that are still used today in government and society.
