describe the epidermis layer of skin starting with basal layer and the function of each outer layer
new cells grow from basal layer every 2 to 4 weeks; within the basal layer are melanocytes which give skin it’s pigment by releasing melanin which also protects against UV rays; the basal layer produces keratinocytes which produce keratin for the skin which protects skin and provides waterproofing.
cells form bonds by use of desmosomes in the spinous layer
externally past the basal layer, cells begin to die and are left keratinized
in the granular layer are decomposing keratinocytes
cells are completely dead and only contain keratin in the stratum corneum
what types of structures are found in the dermis?
capillaries collagenous/elastic fibers involuntary muscles (arrector pili) nerve endings hair sudoriferous glands (sweat) sebaceous glands (oil)
