Predestination
The Calvinist doctrine that no amount of good deeds or good works could save those destined for hell from that destiny. The same idea applied to those who were saved, their actions did not affect that.
Puritans
Members of the Church of England who sought to purify what they believed was a faith that was too close to Catholicism.
Separatists
Zealous Christians who felt that they needed to break away from the Church of England in order to truly worship in the proper manner.
Mayflower Compact
While this was not a constitution it was an invaluable step towards self government in the New World. It established a simple majority rules government for the Pilgrims.
Massachusetts Bay Colony
This was a well equipped expedition that was begun with almost 1000 settlers. It would become one of the most profitable of all of the colonies.
John Winthrop
The governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony who said that he wanted this colony “to be as a city upon a hill.” Meaning he wanted the colony to become something to be emulated throughout the world.
Roger WIlliams
Founder of Rhode Island. He established a remarkably free colony that became the refuge for many cast offs from other colonies.
King Phillip’s War
This war between the Puritans and the Indian chief Metacom, known as King Phillip to the English, this war slowed the westward march of the English for several decades. More importantly it completely wiped out Indian resistance in New England.
English Navigation Laws
Laws that sought to tie the colonies more closely to England, but forcing them to trade only with British controlled ports.
Salutary Neglect
A time period where the Navigation Laws and others laws that controlled trade were only loosely enforced. This time period led Colonists to harshly resent the trade laws later, when they are strictly enforced again.
William Penn
Founder of Pennsylvania. He established a Quaker colony that contained not only good farmland, and ample timber, but also America’s largest city, Philadelphia. Pennsylvania was also a place where relations with Native Americans were better than average.
Blue Laws
Laws that could be found in Pennsylvania that prohibited ungodly behaviors, things such as playing dice or cards, dancing, stage plays, or excessive hilarity.
