King Cotton
A reference to the Southern economy’s dependence on Cotton, and the world’s dependence on the cotton the South produced.
White Majority
The white majority refers to the fact that the majority of white southerners did not own slaves.
Overseers
Men whose job it was to watch over plantation slaves as they worked in the fields.
Nat Turner’s Rebellion
An African-American who led a slave insurrection that actually succeeded in killing some whites. Nat and the other rebels were all killed.
Amistad
A Spanish slave ship that was overtaken by the slaves, who then attempted to take the ship back to Africa. John Quincy Adams later secured the freedom of these slaves.
American Colonization Society
A group dedicated to sending freed slaves back to Africa. They even created a country, Liberia, to house former slaves.
William Lloyd Garrison
A radical abolitionist who is best remembered for running and publishing the newspaper The Liberator.
American Anti-Slavery Society
A group of prominent men who fought for abolition together. William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips were prominent members.
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
The remarkable story of Frederick Douglass’ journey from slavery to freedom.
Mason-Dixon Line
Originally the southern border of colonial Pennsylvania. It later referred to the division between Northern and Southern society.
Gag Resolution
This required the U.S. Congress to table any talk about anti-slavery issues. This law was later repealed due to th efforts of John Quincy Adams.
Explain the social hierarchy of Southern Society
Planter Class - People who own lots of land and over 100 slaves
Small slave holders - Land owners who also owned a moderate number of slaves.
Land Owning Whites - White people who owned land, but no slaves.
