A

Dred Scott Case

A

The case of a slave who was taken to free territory by his owner and then sued for his freedom. The case resulted in a verdict that stated slaves could be taken anywhere in the United States and held there as property. It effectively legalized slavery everywhere in the United States.

A

Lincoln-Douglass Debates

A

A series of debates that made Lincoln a national figure. They also showed the fundamental difference between Douglass’ Freeport Doctrine, which said slavery would be put down by the people if they wanted it gone, and Lincoln’s belief that slavery would have to be written out of society with laws.

Harper’s Ferry

A

The federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry was attacked by the crazed abolitionist John Brown. Brown was attempting to acquire guns to arm slaves for an uprising. He was later hanged for his actions, making him a martyr to the Abolitionist cause.
