Authored by Hinton R. Helper. This book cast poor landless whites as the people who suffered most under the slave system. He did not like the slave system, or the Africans that it brought to America.
Bleeding Kansas
The popular term used to describe all of the violence between the supporters of slavery and those opposed to it.
Lecompton Constitution
The Kansas constitution that voters could vote for either with slavery, or without slavery. The catch in the Lecompton constitution was that even if it was voted in without slavery, those slave holders already in the state would be protected.
Preston Brooks
The Southern congressmen who beat Senator Charles Sumner with a cane over insults he made towards the slave holding states and some of its representatives.

Dred Scott Case
The case of a slave who was taken to free territory by his owner and then sued for his freedom. The case resulted in a verdict that stated slaves could be taken anywhere in the United States and held there as property. It effectively legalized slavery everywhere in the United States.
Panic of 1857
A financial crash and panic that was caused at least partially by the influx of California gold and the overproduction of farm products. It provided the Republicans an excellent opportunity to win the election of 1860.
Lincoln-Douglass Debates
A series of debates that made Lincoln a national figure. They also showed the fundamental difference between Douglass’ Freeport Doctrine, which said slavery would be put down by the people if they wanted it gone, and Lincoln’s belief that slavery would have to be written out of society with laws.
Harper’s Ferry
The federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry was attacked by the crazed abolitionist John Brown. Brown was attempting to acquire guns to arm slaves for an uprising. He was later hanged for his actions, making him a martyr to the Abolitionist cause.
How did Lincoln win the election of 1860?
He allowed the Democrats to splinter their vote in many directions and held a popular appeal only in the North. 60% of voters in the United States had not voted for him.
