Who was the Vice-President who took over when William Henry Harrison died shortly after becoming President?
John Tyler. Tyler was a former Democrat who had recently joined the Whigs. As President he operated without a political party.
Aroostook War
A war over prime timber between Canadian and Maine Lumberjacks. In the end the Webster-Ashburton Treaty resolved the matter and set the Northern border of Maine.
Lone Star Republic
The name of the independent country of Texas after its war of independence from Mexico. This nation lasted from 1836 until 1845 when Texas was officially welcomed into the United States.
Oregon Territory Dispute
A dispute between the British and Americans over who had claim to Oregon and where the border between Canada and the United States should be drawn. 49’ was settled as the final border.
Oregon Trail
The popular trail to the Northwest that led Americans to populate and strengthen their claim to the Oregon Territory.
Manifest Destiny
The belief that God had destined Americans to spread the ideals of their democracy over the entire North American continent and beyond.

James K. Polk
Walker Tariff
Passed in 1846 this tariff lowered the tariff and met one of James K. Polk’s four goals. It greatly pleased the South.
Mexican-American War
Fought between Mexico and America over the right to annex Texas and acquire California, New Mexico, Arizona and other parts of the Southwest.
Zachary Taylor and WInfeild Scott
Taylor was known as Old Rough and Ready, Scott was known as Old Fuss and Feathers. They combined to invade and conquer Mexico.
Spot Resolutions
Abraham Lincoln’s persistence that Polk produce the spot where American blood was shed on American soil. This attempt to prevent the Mexican-American War cost Lincoln his seat in congress.
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The treaty by which the U.S. acquired all of the Southwest. The treaty gave nearly half of Mexico to the United States. In exchange the U.S. paid the Mexicans 15 million dollars.
The Wilmot Proviso
A law that passed through the House of Representatives, but did not get through the Senate. The proposed law had suggested that there should never be any slavery allowed in the territory acquired from Mexico.
