What is a nation-state?
A division of an ethnic group such as Native Americans, that is also an autonomous ruling entity. Examples would include the Aztecs and Incas.
Cahokia
Once home to nearly 25,000 Mississippian Indians, it is located near present day East St. Louis.
What crops are involved in 3 sister farming?
Beans, Corn, and Squash. Beans grew up the trellis created by the cornstalk, while squash covered the ground helping it to retain moisture.
Caravel
A Portuguese ship that could sail into the wind.
Plantation system
A system of farming based on large-scale commercial agriculture and the wholesale exploitation of slave labor.
Christopher Columbus
The Italian sailor who led a group of 3 ships across the Atlantic for 6 weeks before finally making landfall on the Bahamas, thereby becoming the first European explorer since the Vikings to land in North America.
The Columbian Exchange
The exchange of everything from plants and animals, to microorganisms, that occurred when Columbus and his men set foot in the New World from Europe.
What is a conquistador?
A Spanish conqueror. This is the name given to the men who were the first explorers of North America and beyond.
Encomienda System
It allowed the Spanish government to “commend” or give, Indians to certain colonists for the promise to Christianize them. It was essentially slavery.
Pope’s Rebellion
A religious uprising by Native Americans in 1680 in New Mexico. It was a result of the Spanish trying to suppress Native religious beliefs.
