what does the respiratory system consist of?
the nose, nasal cavity and sinuses, pharynx, larynx, trachea
what are external nares?
where air enters the respiratory system
pharynx is
the passageway formed by the nose, mouth and throat
what are the three divisions of the pharynx?
nasopharynx, oropharynx, larynopharynx
what is the nasopharynx?
superior portion of the pharynx, lined by typical respiratory epithelium
what is the eustachian tube?
tube that goes from ear to the back of the throat
what is the oropharynx?
extends between the soft palate and the base of the tongue at the level of the hyoid bone
what is the laryngopharynx?
includes the region of the pharynx lying between the hyoid bone and the entrance to the esophagus
what is the glottis?
the narrow opening where air leaves the pharynx
what is the larynx?
protects the glottis and is in control of sound production
what is the trachea?
tough, flexible tube with a diameter of about 2.5 cm and a length of approximately 11 cm
what is the mediastinum?
the end of the trachea where it branches off into the right and left primary bronchi
what are the three lobes of the right lung?
superior, middle and inferior
what is the horizontal fissure?
separates superior and middle lobes
what is the oblique fissure?
separates the superior and inferior lobes
