chapter 22 Carvascular; vessels and circulation Flashcards
what are the three layers of the arteries and vein walls?
tunica intima, tunica media, tunica externa
tunica intima is the
innermost layer of a blood vessel
tunica media is that
middle layer and contains smooth muscle tissue in a framework of loose connective tissue
the tunica externa is the
outer most layer that forms a connective sheath around the vessel
what are muscular arteries?
transport blood to the bodys skeletal muscle and internal organs
what are arterioles?
smaller than muscular arteries and control the blood flow between arteries and capillaries
what are capillaries?
smallest and most delicate blood vessels
why are capillaries important?
bc they are the only blood vesseld whose walls permit exchange between the blood and the surrounding interestial fluid
what are the three types of capillaries?
continuous, fenestrated and sinusoids
continuous capillaries
found in most regions of the body
fenestrated capillaries
capillaries that contain “windows” in their walls found in kidneys
Sinusoids
resemble fenestrated capillaries except they have larger pores and a thinner basal lining. found in the liver, bone marrow and adrenal glands
what are venules?
the smallest veins, collect blood from capillaries
what are venous valves?
one way valves that are formed from infoldings of the tunica intima
