Chapter 23 - cell division Flashcards
Name the significance of mitosis
- growth -organisms increase by mitosis
- cell replacement- repairs and heals for maintenance
- genetic stability - daughter cells are identical to parent cells
- regeneration- missing limbs can grow back
- asexual reproduction - plant species, bacteria and animals propagated by mitosis
Name the Principles of cloning
- Take a cell
- Remove the nucleus
- Remove the egg cell and remove the nucleus
- The nucleus from donor is then replaced into enucleated egg cell by electrical shock
- The fused cell begins to divide and forms an embryo
- The embryo is placed in the womb and left to develop
- The new individual is now genetically identical
State the social implication of cloning
- Cloning animals might be advantageous
2. Cloning plants might be a great advantage
Define cancer
Is a disease affecting the growth rate of cells leading to uncontrolled division which results in a tumours
State the development of cancer
- Stated with mutation in DNA
- Leads to disturbance in activity of genes
- Mutation damages ability to control rate if growth
- Leads to uncontrollable mitosis
- Many cancerous cells fails to differenciate into functional tissue cells and form tumours
- Benign tumours are harmless
- Malignant tumours invade surrounding cells
- Cancer can be treated by radiation or surgery
Name 9 factors that may increase risk of developing cancer
- UV rays
- Radiation
- Exposure to carcinogens
- Viral infections
- Excessive fats
- Excessive salts
- Alcohol
- Alpha and beta particles
- Asbestos dust
Define meiosis
Type of cell division by which four haploid cells are formed which are genetically different from each other
The significance of meiosis
- This is the basis of sexual reproduction
2. Genetic variation is possible
Role of meiosis in sexual reproduction
- Meiosis is a reduction division
- Change diploid cells into haploid
- Prevents zygote from having 92 chromosomes
- Cause genetic variations
Define mitosis
Type of cell division by which cells divide into two daughter cells forming identical cells with full set of chromosomes
