Libel - written insult
Slander - verbal insult
False Imprisonment
Restraint without doctors order or consent of patient
Involuntary seclusion
Separating from others against their will
Active/passive neglect
Active Neglect - Purposely harming by failing to provide care
Passive Neglect - Unintentional harm by failing to provide care
Negligence
Actions, or failure to act, causing harm/injury
Malpractice
Negligence by a licensed professional
Mandated Reporter
Required to report suspect or observed abuse or neglect
Signs of physical abuse - 13
Unexplained broken bones, bruising, similar injuries occurring again
Burns in unusual places or shapes
Bite marks, scratches
Unexplained weight loss, dehydration
Dry, cracked, torn, bleeding skin
Missing hair, broken or missing teeth
Blood in underwear, bruising in genital area
Signs of psychological abuse - 5
Depression or withdrawal Mood swings Fear and anxiety, especially when a certain caregiver is present Lack of appetite Fear of being left alone
Signs of neglect - 15
Sores on body, weight loss, poor appetite, dehydration
Frequent complaints of hunger or thirst
Strong smell of urine, unclean body, dirty/matted/unstyled hair
Ragged or dirty fingernails
Soiled clothes or bed linens or incontinence briefs not being changed
Ripped or torn clothing
Damaged or poorly fitting hearing aids, glasses, dentures
Unanswered call lights
Other signs of abuse - 6
Missing Doctor’s appointments, changing doctors frequently
Wearing makeup or sunglasses to hide injuries
Family concern that abuse is occurring
Person not taking medications
Caregiver not allowing anyone to be alone with the resident
