ego integrity
The accrued assurance of the ability to find order, meaning, and integration in one’s life

life review
The process of telling one’s life story structured around themes that make meaning of one’s life.
life narrative
An individual’s life story that reflects a sense (or lack) of unity, purpose, and meaning.
activity theory of aging
A theory of aging that suggests social interaction and physical activity are indicators of successful aging.
disengagement theory of aging
A theory of aging that suggests it is normal and healthy for older individuals to disengage from their previous roles and to focus energy on personal development.
socio-emotional selectivity theory
A model of aging that focuses on diminishing social networks, leading to positive emotional regulation based on the perception that there is limited time to live.
social convoy
A social support network to which an individual remains connected throughout the lifespan.
subjective well-being
A person’s perception of his or her general sense of psychological satisfaction.
remote grandparents
A grandparent–grandchild relationship in which the grandparent(s) are emotionally distant and primarily expect obedience and respect from their grandchildren.
companionate grandparents
A grandparent–grandchild relationship in which the grandparent(s) enjoy frequently entertaining their grandchildren.
involved grandparents
A grandparent–grandchild relationship in which the grandparent(s) are often involved in daily care of their grandchildren.
beanpole family
A family with members from many generations, but with few members in each generation.
elder abuse
A single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust that causes harm or distress to an older person.
emotional well-being
A state encompassing different dimensions of wellness, including autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance (Ryff & Keyes, 1999).
