requirements of a group
- Consists of 2 or more people
- Interact with each other over a period of time
- People of the group must influence each other
- Members must have a common purpose
power within a group
someone has power over another person within a group if someone can get the other person to do what they want them to do, even against their wishes.
obedience
when someone behaves in a specific way when order to by an authority.
Authority
the power to order individuals to act in a certain manner.
conformity
actions that comply a group’s attitude and beliefs.
normative influences
A person’s tendency to go along with a group so that they will fit in. If people are similar within the group normative influence plays a bigger role.
culture’s affect on conformity
culture can affect conformity as cultures are normally collectivists or individualists. Asian countries reported higher conformity than western countries.
information tendency
the tendency to conform as although they want to provide a correct response they are uncertain of their ability to do so, believing that others are more capable.
group size (conformity)
Asch varied the experiment size from 1 other person with the participant to 14 other people, conformity rates maxed at three to four people and continued at the same rate no matter how many people were added.
unamity
if another person said the correct answer then the participant would be significantly less likely to conform.
deindividualisation
when the experiment was performed face to face conformity rates were high but when performed not face to face conformity dropped.
social loafing
when people don’t work as hard within a group compared to working alone
