Chap4 Plasma Membranes Flashcards
What is the main component of plasma membranes?
Phospholipids
(phosphate attached to two fatty acids)
What are the main functions of membrane?
Controls what goes in/out of cell
allow cell to change shape
site of biochemical reactions
isolates organelles from cytoplasm
Describe structure of phospholipid
Hydrophilic head faces water (outwards) hydrophobic tail faces away from water (inwards) all due to polar nature of cell
What two structures formed when phospholipid exposed to water?
Bilayer and micelle
What is the role of intrinsic proteins?
Carrier proteins or channels that help transport substances vital for cells function but cannot diffuse across membrane
What is the role of extrinsic proteins?
Give Example
(extracellular) act as receptors for hormones or neurotransmitters
Eg) glycoprotein
(carbohydrate and protein)
What is chemical equation of cholesterol?
C27 H46 O
What is the role of cholesterol?
Controls membrane fluidity.
Keeps membrane stable at normal body temperature because without it cell would burst open
Describe movement of proteins
Most move sideways along bilayer
large proteins are in fixed position
What two factors effect membrane permeability?
Temperature and solvent
How does temperature effect permeability of membrane?
High temperature phospholipid gains more kinetic energy, raising permeability, leading to membrane breakdown.
Denatures protein within membrane and can impact carrier proteins directly or alter fluid mosaic.
How does solvent effect permeability of membrane?
Give Example
Dissolves phospholipid membrane
Eg) alcohol alters permeability of neurone membrane in brain
