Chap23 Ecosystems Flashcards
Ecosystem
Interacting living organisms and non-living conditions in an area
Biomass
Mass of all living material in ecosystem
Gross production
Total amount of light energy a plant uses to form biomass
Net production
Energy/ biomass after respiration
Formula for net production
Gross production - respiratory losses
Efficiency formula
Biomass transferred / biomass intake x 100
Trophic level
Each stage in a food chain
Producer
Concerts light energy into chemical energy by photosynthesis
Decomposers
Break down dead organisms to release nutrients into ecosystem
Ecological efficiency
Efficiency with which energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next
Succession
An ecosystem changes from simple to complex overtime
Primary succession
Newly formed land where no soil or organic material present to start with
Secondary succession
Soil is present but no plant or animal species
Pioneer community
Change the environment to make it less hostile and enable species to survive
Intermediate communities
Release nutrients into the soil
