ch4 Flashcards
dualism
belief that the universe is built out of thought and matter (2 things)
monoism
belief that the universe is built of a single substance.
mere exposure effect
when people prefer stimuli they have experienced before
priming
when people respond quicker/more accurately to questions they have seen before even if they don’t remember them.
blind sight
when blind people grab/describe something they cant see
conscious level
information about you and where you currently are
nonconscious level
body processes controlled by the mind (heartbeat, digestion etc.)
preconscious level
memories that you are not thinking of, but could think of when prompted
subconscious level
information you aren’t aware of, but must exist due to behavior
unconscious level
information that is deemed unacceptable by the conscious mind, and is repressed in the unconscious level
sleep
sleep is a state of consciousness. sleep is NOT unconsciousness
sleep cycles
a person having similar metabolic/thought patterns every day
sleep onset
stage between being awake and falling asleep. brain produces alpha waves
sleep stage 1/2
brain produces theta waves
sleep stage 3/4
brain releases delta waves. brain waves are the slowest here
Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep
occurs during stages 2/3/4. brain is just as active as an awake person.
insomnia
cant fucking sleep/stay asleep
narcolepsy
falling asleep randomly in weird ass places
sleep apnea
stops breathing for short periods of time when asleep. Wakes them up, but people normally don’t remember it.
night terrors
wakes up from sleep in a terrified state. cause unknown.
manifest content
literal content/meaning of a dream
latent content
deeper meanings of a dream
activation synthesis theory
states that dreams are the brain’s interpretations of what is going on physically during REM sleep
information processing theory
states that dreams are caused as a coping method for stress and interpreting information.
Freudian theory
believes dreams are unconscious desires
drugs
chemicals that change brain & body chemistry and cause a altered state of consciousness
agonists
drugs that fit into neuron receptor sites and function as a neurotransmitter
antagonists
fits into neuron receptor cites and blocks neurotransmitters
psychological dependance
desire for a drug so a person feels a certain way
physiological dependance
desire for a drug due to a tolerance/withdrawal symptoms
stimulants
(caffeine, cocaine)
speeds up body processes & autonomic nervous system, followed by a sense of euphoria
depressants
(alcohol, barbiturates, anxiolytics)
slows down body processes & autonomic nervous system, followed by a sense of euphoria.
slowed brain processes cause behavioral changes
hallucinogens/psychdelics
(LSD, peyote, psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana)
causes distorted perceptions of reality (hallucinations)
opiates
(codeine, morphine, heroin, methadone)
relieves pain & elevates mood
reverse tolerance
when a smaller 2nd dose causes larger effects then 1st larger dose
