How do possessive and objective pronouns appear?
They appear as suffixes on nouns, propositions, and the definite direct object marker.
(For this reason they are called pronominal sufffixes).
How are pronominal suffixes translated when appearing on nouns?
They are possessive
‘His book’, or ‘Her wisdom’
How are pronominal suffixes translated when appearing on propositions or the definite direct object marker?
They are objective
‘to them’, ‘for them’, or ‘them’
What kind of nouns do Type 1 and Type 2 suffixes occur with?
Type 1 suffixes occur with singular nouns.
Type 2 suffixes occur with plural nouns.
(with few exceptions)
Do all pronominal suffixes have person, gender, and number?
Yes
The first person singular and plural forms are common, meaning not inflected for gender
What is the dot in the Het of the 3fs suffix called?
Mappiq
It frequently marks the 3fs suffix
What happens when a masculine plural noun takes a suffix?
it will drop the plural ending
What happens when a feminine plural that takes masculine plural endings takes a suffix
it will drop the plural ending
What happens to nouns that end in ה ֶ and it takes a suffix
They will usually drop the ending before taking a suffix
What happens when a feminine noun ends in ה ָ and it takes a suffix
The ה is replaced by a ת
What happens when a feminine plural noun takes a suffix?
The plural ending is retained
How should the definite direct object marker be translated with a suffix?
- As in the accusative case
How can the definite direct object marker be differentiated from the preposition when it takes a suffix?
- The Preposition has a Daghesh in the Taw and has a Hireq under the initial consonant
- The Preposition means “with” and has a Hireq under intial consonant with represents the ‘i’ in “with”
(The object marker has a Holem after the first consonant, except for 2 mp/fp where it has a Seghol; the Holem stands for object marker)
How can עִם be differentiated from עַם when it takes a suffix? (with and people)
- עִם will take an initial Hireq throughout
- עַם will take an initial Pathach throughout
Both take a Daghesh in the מ when pronominal suffixes are added.
What is a resumptive pronoun?
- A pronoun within the relative clause that refers back to the noun that the relative clause modifies.
- They appear as a suffix added onto a preposition (at least in the examples)
(Although resumptive pronouns are common in Hebrew, it is best to omit them in English translation.)
