Ch 5: The Skeletal System - Bone Tissue Flashcards
What is the bone made of?
Bone Tissue
Cartilage
Adipose
What are the parts of the skeletal system?
Bones
Joints
Cartilages
Ligaments
What do ligaments attach?
Bone to bone
What are the 2 subdivisions of the skeleton?
Axial and Appendicular
What are the 2 types of bone tissue?
Compact
Spongy
What does the Girdle do?
Attaches appendicular to axial
What are the functions of the skeletal system?
Provides support
Protects internal organs
Assists body movements
Mineral Homeostasis
Hemopoiesis
Stores triglycerides in adipose cells of yellow marrow
What is mineral homeostasis?
Storage and release of calcium and phosphorus
What is hemopoiesis
Blood cell production
What is compact bone composed of?
Osteon which have lamellae
What is this:
Trabeculae confer strength to bone
No osteons but there is lamellae and osteocytes
Capillaries in endosteum supply nutrients
Spongy Bone
What is Osteogenesis? (Ossification)
Process of bone formation
What is appositional growth?
Bone growth in width
On inside it’s called Osteoclasts
On outside it’s called osteoblasts
How many different phases are involved in the healing process of a broken bone?
3 phases in 4 steps
What are the steps in healing of bones?
Formation of fracture hematoma
Fibrocartilage Callus formation
Bony Callous
Bone remodeling
