Ch. 2: Neuroscience & Biological Foundation Flashcards
Controlled my multiple genes
Polygenic
A statistical formula that provides a percentage of variation in a population attribute to genetic factors
Heritability
Process by which heritable traits that increase organisms chance of survival of reproduction
Natural selection
The order of how an information travels through a neuron
Dendrite > cell body> axon> terminal buttons
Make up 90% of the brains total cells. They supply nutrients& oxygen, clean-up task, insulate one neuron from another so neural messages are not scrambled
Glial cells
The tiny opening between the sending and receiving neuron
Synapse
What do agonist drugs do?
Enhance the neurotransmitter
What do antagonist drugs do?
Block or inhibit the effects
The system which is made up of networks and glands which uses hormones to carry its messages
Endocrine system
The study of the relative effect of heredity and the environment on behavior and mental processes
Behavioral genetics
What system consist of the brain, spinal cord and sensory organs.
Nervous system
What does the central nervous system do? And what does it contain?
Control center. Contains the brain and the spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system.
Carries information to and from the central nervous system
Controls voluntary movements, convey information to the CNS. Motor messages
Somatic nervous system
Autonomic nervous system controls involuntary life functions. What is its subdivision
Sympathetic nervous system & parasympathetic nervous system
