what is the mechanism of action of barbiturates?

- minor tranquilizers, anxiolytics
- hypnotics
- (-pam/-lam)
- reduced anxiety and insomnia
- GABA
what is anterograde amnesia? how does this happen?
- no recollection of anything
- benzodiazepines with opioids or alcohol
what are the examples of non-benzodiazepines? what do they do?
- zolpidem and eszopiclone
- GABA inhibitors
what age group should barbiturates and benzodiazepines not be given to? why?
- older adults
- increases CNS depression, confusion, and falls
what happens if you abruptly stop hypnotics?
tremors and muscle twitching
