Cells Flashcards
What is haemopoiesis?
Production of blood cells
Where are blood cells for haemopoiesis derived from?
Pluripotent stem cells
In the embryo, main sites of haemopoiesis?
Yolk sac, liver, marrow
3-7 months - spleen
As an adult where does haemopoiesis occur?
Bone marrow of : Skull Ribs Sternum Pelvis Proximal ends of femur
Why are they called granulocytes?
Granules visible on microscopy
What cells make up the granulocytes??
Neutrophils
Eosinophils
Basophils
What is neutrophilia?
Increased number of circulation neutrophils
Marinating pool not included - steroids reducing marination so neutrophilia may be seen instead
What is margination?
Neutrophils adhere to vessel wall
What may increase number of neutrophils?
Body stress - infections, trauma, infarction, inflammation, steroids
What reactions are eosinophils involved with?
Hypersensitivity
Eosinophils circulate in bloodstream for longer/ shorter than neutrophils?
Longer
What is eosinophilia?
Increased number of circulating eosinophils
What may cause eosinophilia?
Allergic action to drugs Severe skin conditions - atopic dermatitis Asthma , atrophy Parasitic infection Hodgkin's lymphoma , T cell lymphomas Pulmonary syndromes
What so basophil granules contain?
Histamine and heparin
What do basophils have on their surface ?
IgE receptors (Fc receptors)
