Cell Structure & Function Flashcards
Nucleus
Houses genetic information (DNA), controls cellular structure and functions
Nucleolus
Produces ribosomes
Ribosome
Site of protein synthesis
Cytosol
Fluid portion of their the cytoplasm that surrounds the organelles
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Network of flattened sacs that synthesize glycoproteins and phospholipids
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Network of tubules that synthesize lipids (fatty acids and steroids)
Golgi Apparatus
Modifies, sorts, packages and transports proteins received from rough ER
Mitochondrion
Generates energy (ATP)
Lysosome
Contain digestive enzymes that breakdown molecules
Centrioles
Organizing center for growth of mitotic spindles (for cell division) and micro tubules
Plasma Membrane
Selectively permeable outer barrier of the cell. Controls what enters/exits the cell
Cytoskeleton
Network of protein filaments that extend through the cytosol giving the cell shape and stability
