Anatomical Position
Body erect, feet slightly apart, palms facing forward, thumbs pointing away from the body
Superior (=Cranial)
Toward the head (above)
Inferior (=Caudal)
Away from the head (below)
Anterior (=Ventral)
Toward the front of the body (in front of)
Posterior (=Dorsal)
Toward the back of the body (behind)
Medial
Toward the midline
Lateral
Away from the midline
Intermediate
Between a medial and lateral structure
Proximal
Nearer to the limb’s origin body part
Distal
Farther from the limb’s origin body part
Superficial
Toward (nearer to) the body’s surface; External
Deep
Away (further) from the body’s surface; Internal
Sagittal
Divides body into left and right parts
Midsagittal
Sagittal plane that lies on the midline, dividing the body into equal left and right halves
Parasagittal
Sagittal plane that splits the body into unequal left and right parts
Frontal (=Coronal)
Divides the body into anterior and posterior parts
Transverse (cross section)
Plane that divides the body into superior and inferior parts (horizontal cut)
Oblique section
Diagonal cuts that pass through a transverse plane and a sagittal or coronal plane
Ipsilateral
On the same side of the body as another structure
Contralateral
On the opposite side of the body relative to another structure
