Cell Division Flashcards
What are the beginning steps of life of sexually reproducing organisms?
start as a single cell, divide into 2 cells, divide into 4 cells, develop into an embryo
What cells go through Mitosis?
somatic cells
How does chromosome number change with mitosis?
daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes as parent cell (diploid)
What happens during mitosis prior to cell division?
each chromosome is replicated
What are identical copies of chromosomes?
chromatids
When do chromatids separate for mitosis?
prior to cell division
what happens when chromosomes replicate for mitosis?
DNA replicates
What happens when strands separate for mitosis?
old strands serve as template for synthesis of new double stranded molecule
What are the steps of mitosis?
prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
What happens during prophase?
- chromatin condenses into chromosomes
- nuclear envelope disappears
What happens during metaphase?
chromosomes align at the equator
What happens during anaphase?
- sister chromatids separate
- centromeres divide
What happens during Telophase?
- chromatin expands
- cytoplasm divides
What type of division is mitosis?
differentiation and growth
What type of division is meiosis?
reduction division
