Catullus 11-13 Flashcards
Furi et Aureli comites Catulli,
Furius and Aurelius, comrades of Catullus,
sive in extremos penetrabit Indos,
whether he shall penetrate into farthest India,
litus ut longe resonante Eoa
tunditur unda,
as the shore is pounded by the eastern wave echoing far away,
sive in Hyrcanos Arabesve molles,
Whether (he shall penetrate) among the Hyrcanians or the soft Arabs
seu Sagas sagittiferosve Parthos,
or into the land of Sagae arrow-carrying Parthians
sive quae septemgeminus colorat
aequora Nilus,
or into the seas which the seven mouthed Nile colors,
Sive trans altas gradietur Alpes,
or he shall step across the high Alps,
Caesaris visens monimenta magni,
seeing the monuments of great Caesar,
Gallicum Rhenum horribile aequor ulti-
mosque Britannos,
the Gallic Rhine, the horrible sea and the farthest Britains,
omnia haec, quaecumque feret voluntas
caelitum,
all these things, whatever the will of the gods will bring,
temptare simul parati,
prepared to try at the same time,
pauca nuntiate meae puellae
non bona dicta.
announce a few words, not good, to my girl.
cum suis vivat valeatque moechis,
Let her live and let her be well with her adulterers,
quos simul complexa tenet trecentos,
whom 300 she holds having embraced them at the same time,
nullum amans vere, sed identidem omnium
ilia rumpens;
loving no one truly, but repeatedly breaking the groins of all of them;
nec meum respectet, ut ante, amorem,
And let her not regard/respect my love, as before,
qui illius culpa cecidit velut prati
ultimi flos,
which by her own fault has fallen, just like a flower of the farthest field,
praetereunte postquam tactus aratro est.
after it was touched by a passing plow.
