Vary IED wait times
What are the mitigations for Proximity
Do not move forward of junction in fuse
Forward facing
Beware of GW prox windows
Side facing
No RF transmissions
Approach from rear quarter
Always accompanied by EMR/Static
Shield (Wrap In Foil) only when directed
What are the mitigations for EMR/ESD (Electro Magnetic Radiation/Electro Static Discharge)
Transmit radios at appropriate power and distance
Turn down/off all radios in area
Isolate HZ power lines
Turn off directional radar in area
Ground before touching or close proximity (2 secs)
UXO on asphalt or concrete employ ground electrode
Exposed black powder is susceptible to ESD
Shield as detailed in ref manual
What are the mitigations for Jet
Do not approach/move/exit in front of UXO
Mitigate minimum 1m earth
If no mitigation, evacuate 200mils each side of axis for 2km
If remote move consider mitigation of jet always
Generally combine piezo hazard
What are the mitigations for Piezo
DON’T - Knock, strike or jar
Move UXO only by remote means
Do not drop items, hammer in pickets, bounce WB within 10m of UXO
Do not induce a rapid temp change in the fuse
May initiate if moved at all
What are the mitigations for Long Delay
Hold for all unknown bomb fuses, recon after generic wait
After POS ID wait time as directed
NOTAM and QDR 2 after POS ID (Quantity distance range)
What are the mitigations for Clockwork
DON’T - Knock, strike or jar
Wait 1.5 times max time setting if known
First approach listen for ticking
Remote listening post with regular checks
Unknown fuse ticking, IA evacuate
Known fuse ticking, as per procedure
What are the mitigations for Booby Trap
Hold if ground has been ant enemy access since UXO landed (intel on enemy)
Treat all mines as booby trapped
Look, feel, prod, I.e F3, Ghostwire drills as per threat assessment
Mark clear areas
Remotely move only
What are the mitigations for Ejection
Carriers, mines, ports and other bursters that eject a payload, stay clear of ejection port/opening.
Use cation around undeployed tail assemblies
What are the mitigations for Magnetic
Hazard takes precedence over EMR hazard
Do not change state of radar, RF emitters etc
No vehicles within area
Remove all metal from body
Do not disturb metal in area
Non-magnetic tools
PPE on as soon as magnetic hazard dropped
Protective clothing as first return to ICP
What are the mitigations for Acoustic/Seismic
No vehicles in area
Secure/remove loose clothing that makes a noise
No vocals near approach
Full acoustic silence near device
Any noise freeze for time
No metal/metal contact
If UXO is touched do not rub or slide hands
What are the mitigations for Phosphorous
PPE including respirator on approach
First aid and water available
Do not inhale smoke
S10 must be carried on the man
Emergency services to cordon
Wet sand/water available down range (transport)
Approach from upwind unless other hazards dictate
What are the mitigations for Fire
Do not inhale smoke or fumes
PPE is mask/gloves or S10 carried on the man
Emergency services to cordon
Wet sand available down range (water may induce reaction)
Approach from upwind unless other hazards dictate
What are the mitigations for Fuel
30m in direction of venturi
Approach all rocket/missiles from rear quarter
SCBA and TES suit for liquid fuels
Upwind and out of liquid pools
Observe EMR/static
What are the mitigations for Chemical/Biological
Log wind direction
Cordon
On confirmation enact downwind plot
Personal Decontamination Station available
Adhere to principles on contamination control
Conduct IA drills IAW LWP 3-9-10
Apply correct MOPP level / PPE
Notify EODCC immediately
Use chemical detectors
What are the mitigations for Radiation
Do not inhale/digest the dust/smoke from DU or items containing or struck by DU rounds
Seek specialist equipment
Minimise time IVO device
Do not attempt close recon without detection devices
Impose initial chemical evacuation cordon
Max distance between personnel and device
Employ appropriate shielding
What are the mitigations for Compressed gasses and liquids
Do not knock or jar compressed gas cylinders/pressurised fuel/air/hydraulic lines
movement to absolute minimum
PPE if liquid exposed
What are the mitigations for Pressure
Static pressure incl. air pressure on WWII British pistols
Do not touch or cause water disturbance near sensor
Do not expose to blast pressure
What are the mitigations for Galvanic
Do not allow dissimilar metals to come into contact with underwater mine
Remain clear of electrolytes/snag lines/antennas
Do not knock or jar as relays are very sensitive
What are the mitigations for Flooder/Sinker
