Q

What does “enhanced blast” for HE bombs mean?

A

Adding metal powder to HE explosive increases the blast effect. The use of Aluminium is common ie Tritonal but other metals and chemicals are increasing the power of explosives and volumetric blasts.

Q

What are the following countries bomb design features during WW2? -British -American -German -Soviet -Japanese

A
  • British -Separate cone and drum tail unit attached by a screw or clip attachment American -Tails units were light construction, open, square boxed shaped and secured by a single nut.
  • German -Tail unit is of crucifix parallel fins on a cone style tail. -leading edges cut off at 45 degrees -All fusing was transverse
  • Soviet -May resemble british, american or german tail units in shape, with additional fins and cones on drum stlye tails.
  • Japanese -Open fin cone type tail unit. -Single suspension lug (Army fold down, Navy rigid.)

Incendiary
HEAT
Illumination
Smoke
Chemical
Propaganda Leaflets
Combination of these

17
Q

What are the 2 types of runway cratering sub munitions?

A
  • Non-assisted - Uses twin/tandem charges to first make a hole and the second a heaving charge to make a crater.
  • -Assisted - Uses kinetic energy to penetrate the runway. Usually rocket assisted.
18
Q

What are the 2 types of ADW sub-munition dispensers?

A
  • -Retained (case remains with air craft)
  • -Released (case is released and functions after it has left the aircraft)
19
Q

What are the 4 main guided missile components?

A
  • -Guidance
  • -Warhead
  • -Control
  • -Propulsion
20
Q

What are the main roles of the control section on a guided missile?

A
  • Provide weapon steering
  • Provide power and cooling for other sections.
21
Q

What are the 3 guidance systems on guided missiles?

A
  • -Homing (IR, Radar, Laser)
  • -Command (wire, radio, beam riding)
  • -Pre-set (Inertial, Celestial, GPS, Terrain comparison)
22
Q

What are the classification of missiles?

A
  • -AAM (Air to Air)
  • -ASM (air to Surface)
  • -SAM (surface to Air)
  • -SSM (Surface to Surface)
23
Q

What does the SAD on missiles do?

A

Link between the fuze and warhead
Provides safety break before weapon launch
Arms the weapon after launch
A self destruct device (SD)

24
Q

What are the two types of missile propulsion and their subcategories?

A

Airbreating

  • Ramjet
  • Turbo-jet

A

-AAM -SAM

  • Loss of command
  • Time Delay
  • Power run down
26
Q

What are Rollerons on guided missiles and what missiles are they fitted to?

A

Small notched wheels on the tips of the rear tail fins to provide stability in flight. These are fitted to short range AAMs.

27
Q

What are the 3 sea mine positions?

A
  • -Moored
  • -Drifting
  • -Bottom
28
Q

What are the 5 sections of a torpedo?

A

A
  • Seismic
  • acoustic
  • underwater electric potential (UEP)
  • a combination of these.
32
Q

How do underwater mines and depth charges destroy their target?

A

The blast affect of the detonation travels through the water breaking the target vessel.
