AT SGT Fuzes Flashcards
What is a fuze?
A device that initiates an explosive at the correct time and place.
What are the 2 requirements of a fuze and details
Safety - Storage transport and handling
- Pre-mature functioning
Reliability - Function at the correct time
What are the 3 classifications on fuze?

Ingniferous
What are the 3 positions of fuzes?
Nose fuze
Tail fuze
PIBD
Break down the 3 ways fuzes function and their breakdowns?
Time - Mechanical (MT)
- Combustion (T)
- Combination
Impact - super quick (PDSQ), Non-Delay
- Graze
- Delay (DEL)
Proximity - Variable time (VT)
- Controlled VT (CVT)
List 3 combination fuzes.
Mechanical time super quick (MTSQ)
Combustion time super quick (CTSQ)
Multi-option - MO

Air and Gas pressure
Stored energy
What are 6 other requirements of a fuze?
Optional delay setting
Must fit standard cavity sizes
Easy time adjustments/settings
Minimum Preparation for use
Multi role to minimise refusing

User drills safety
All fuzes embody mechanical devices that carry out 4 requirements?
Functions at the desired moment
Remains safe in handling, before and during loading
Remains bore and muzzle safe after firing
Arms after leaving the muzzle
Explain the 2 design safety requirements ?
Safety arrangements can be checked during and after assembly.
Can not be assembled in an unsafe condition.
What is setback force?
The inertia forces acting on the fuze during the initial acceleration of the projectile
What is centrifugal force?
The force which a body moving around a point tends to move away from the rotation
What is set forward force?
The forward motion of components due to deceleration on impact
What a 3 masking devices?
Shutter
Delay arming shutter
Delay or Non-delay masking shutter
What are 3 types of safety mechanisms found in mechanical fuses?
Holding Devices
Locking devices
Safety devices
What is a bore riding pin?
A pin as part of the arming of a fuze that is held in place by the weapon barrel or tube that is only released as the fuse exits the barrel or tube as part of the arming sequence?
What are the advantages of electronics in fuzes?
Lower cost due to multi role functions
Versatility in arming
Mechanical preparation or initiation
What is the function of a time fuze?
to function after a predetermined time whilst in flight
What are 3 types of time fuze?
Combustion
Mechanical
Electronic
What are the 3 timing mechanism names?
Thiel
Junghans
Dixi
What is the definition of a proximity fuze?
Designed to detect the ideal lethal distance from a target before functioning
What are 10 considerations for proximity fuzes?
Rugged
Function in all conditions
Lightweight
Economical
Fits existing projectiles
Sensitive and rapid in operation
Not easily jammed
Not subject to false operation
Safe to handle
Good storage characteristics
What results can be expected when a proximity fuze is dropped from 1 or more meters?
You may crack the ampoule powering the fuze or arm the fuze
What is the Doppler effect?
Radio waves are transmitted out. When waves are reflected off a target the combined waves generate a beat which changes as the target gets closer. At the optimal distance the fuze functions.
What is the difference between VT and CVT fuzes?
Controlled variable time fuses have a timer that stops the fuze functioning until closer to the target area.
List 4 impact fuze actions?
Super quick
Non-delay
Graze
Delay
Explain graze action.
When a projectile is checked in flight or receives an appreciable deceleration a detonator is driven into a pin or vice versa by a weight under inertia
What are 3 impact fuze catagories?
Point detonating fuze
Base detonating fuze
Point initiating base detonating fuze
Name 4 influence fuzez?
Magnetic
Seismic
Hydrostatic
Acoustic
