Case Studies Flashcards
Galápagos Islands = effect of human activites
- explorers and sailors visited caused animals to extinction by eating the,
- non native animals introduced eat native species causing populations to decreases (bad )
- non native plants too causing co,petition causing native plants competition to decrease
- fishing decreased populations of some sea life
- INCREASED TOURISM Increased development = more damage to the islands
Deforestation , farming land cleared , more pollution , disease itneoduouced
Examples of hsd to Galapagos (4)
Iguana hunted by non native cats
- giant tortoise eaten by humans
- quinine tree out competed scalesia tree
- sea cucumber gone by over fishing
How has humans tried to stop the impact on Galapagos
- eradication for wild goats and dogs
- quinine trees reduced with herbicides
- marine protected area to save sea cumcumbers etc
- people visiting Galapagos park have to follow set of rules , in a licensed guide only
Anatarctica human
- blue whale hunted = critically endangered now
- and seal hunting took almost to brink of extinction until seal protocols had to be there
- humans POLUTION FROM SHIPS ETC , now that is much more controlled
How has the impact of humans been controlled here in anatarctica (4)
- anatarctica treaty and nature reserve
- seal hunting banned
- all waste must be taken away
- tourist restrictions included including bans and checks before coming
Lake District impact of human activities
- walk on footpaths = erosion of the footpaths and loss of soils from hillsides
- soils that end up in waterways can DISTURB pH of it too causing Knick on effects for wildlife
- Paths harder to walk on people step on vegetation instead destroying
- also WATER POLLUTIOM , fertilisers etc detergents made its way to the lakes cause EUTROPHICATION!
Controlling impact on Lake District
Conservation charirties and Lake District national authority carry out regular repairs on lathe and regrow damaged vegetation
- walkers educated to stick to path
- SEWAGE HAS IMPROVED , supplying grants to farmers and using phosphate free fertiliser etc
Snowdonia impact humans had
Lot of rain falls which leads to erosion in paths , walkers trample vegetation as they walk around floods
V
How people helped snowdonia
Dug drains next to paths to stop this floods
Terai arc
Where is it
What does it have
What is problem
1) area of forest between Nepal and India
- has variety of species endangered like Bengal tiger and elephant , with 7 million people dependent
2) AREAS of forest being destroyed for more hospitals and develop, eat , so humans and anwinsle increase conflict (like elephants trample crops and tkm er’s kill livestock )
- This increase likelihood of animals being killed
How has Feria arc been managed for human needs too
Conservation charity wwf worked with locals to provide things like solar cookers and biogas generators so they don’t need to use wood from forest we fuel
Also wndourhaed to plakt mint hedges around crops to prevent animals from coming so they can still cultivate
