Cardiac Drugs- Beta Blockers Flashcards
BB examples
(-lol) bisoprolol, atenolol, propranolol, metoprolol, carvedilol
BB indications
angina, heart failure (once stable), hypertension, post acute coronary syndrome
BB MOA
Block binding of adrenaline/noradrenaline (also known as epinephrin/norepinephrine) to adrenaline receptor = slower and less forceful circulation. Through stimulating the sympathetic nervous systems’ fight or flight response.
BB side effects
issues sleeping and sex, cold extremities.
BB Cautions
asthmatics, COPD, bradycardia, certain diabetics and diabetic medications
B1 vs B2 vs non-selective BB
B1 acts on heart, B2 acts on lungs, non-selective BB acts on both. (Remember you have 1 heart and 2 lungs)
How does adrenaline affect heart vs lungs
Heart has vasoconstriction and pumps harder, lungs expand. Like if getting chased by a tiger you’re adrenaline would increase=heart would beat quickly and lungs would work hard to take in more oxygen.
