What is cancer?
uncontrolled growth of normal tissue and the growth of tumours.
What is the difference between benign and malignant tumours?
B = Non-cancerous does not move M = cancerous can invade other cells.
What is a diffuse tumour?
Scattered throughout the body
What is carcinoma?
Cancer skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs.
What is sarcoma?
Cancer of the bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue
What is leukemia?
Cancer of the white blood cells
What is lymphoma?
Cancer of the cells in the immune system
What is myeloma?
Cancer of the B cells that produce antibodies
What are three treatment options for Cancer?
Surgery
Radiation
Chemotherapy
What are some side effects of antineoplastic drugs?
bone marrow depression
skin and GI ulceration
Hair loss
What are alkylating agents used for?
Smaller or slower growing tumours
How do alkylating agents work?
They create an irreversible cross-link in DNA interfering with the replication process.
What are some examples of Alkylating agents?
dacarbazine
oxaliplatin
busulfan
carboplatin
How do antimetabolites work?
They interfere with the metabolism of cancer cells
What are some examples of antimetabolites?
cytarabine
fluorouracil
methotrexate
