what is the most common cause of vertigo in adults?
A
- BPPV
- benign paroxysmal positional vertigo

how does BPPV present?
A
- sudden short lasting episodes of vertigo associated with looking up, getting up and sudden head movements
- nausea

what causes BPPV?
A
-when otoconia is displaced from the utricle and into the semicircular canals (usually posterior)

what is the diagnostic test for BPPV?
A
- Dix Hallpike manoeuvre (move patients head from sitting up to lying down, roughly 20 degrees off bed)
- positive test if the movement triggers bouts of nystagmus (involuntary eye movement)

- Epley manouevre
- Semont maenouvre
