What is it and what causes it
A
-blockage somewhere in the small or large intestine
Causes
-adhesions/ scar tissue
-foreign bodies
-compacted stool
-herniation
-intussusception (telescoping of one segment of bowel into another)
-tumours

Signs and symptoms
A
-abdo distension
-faecal vomit
-absent/ tinkling bowel sounds
-absence of flatus or faeces

Treatment
A
Same as appendicitis and acute cholecystitis
Pain relief
-paracetamol, morphine
Anti emetic
-ondansetron
Pathway
-transfer to hospital for further treatment
