Epiphysis
End of long bones
Diaphysis
Shaft of long bones
Medullary cavity
Hollow inside of long bones.
Yellow bone marrow for adults
Osteocytes
Cells that maintain bone
Osteoclasts
Destroy bone. Remodeling or to free calcium
Osteoprogenitor cells
Bone stem cells that can become osteoblasts
Endosteum
Lines bone cavities
Periosteum
Outside of bones
Outer layer is dense irregular connective tissue
Articular cartilage
Hyaline cartilage at ends of bones where they contact other bones
Lamellae
Visible layers of bone matrix
Osteon
Structural unit of compact bone, tree trunk appearance
Central canal
Canal for blood vessels and nerves in osteon
Lacunae
Small holes between lamellae. Osteocytes located here
Canaliculi
Small canals that radiate outward form central canal blood vessels to lacunae and provide nutrients to osteocytes
Trabeculae
Thin struts of spongy bone
